The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA), the largest medical society in the nation, today announced its endorsement of Xavier Becerra for Governor of California, following approval by the LACMA Board of Directors.
The endorsement follows the California Medical Association’s endorsement of Becerra, announced April 29, 2026. CMA cited Becerra’s record of expanding access to care, protecting patients and supporting physicians throughout his public service career.
“As physicians in Los Angeles continue to navigate extraordinary pressure across our healthcare system, we need leaders who understand the direct connection between patient access, physician practice sustainability and the health of our communities,” said Heather Silverman, M.D., President of LACMA. “Xavier Becerra has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to protecting access to care, strengthening public health and supporting the physicians who serve California’s patients every day. LACMA is proud to endorse his campaign for Governor.”
Becerra most recently served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, where he helped guide national health policy during one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare. He previously served as California Attorney General and as a member of Congress, where he worked on issues related to healthcare access, patient protections, public health and the Affordable Care Act.
For Los Angeles County physicians, the stakes are especially high. The region’s healthcare system faces persistent workforce shortages, rising administrative burdens, reimbursement challenges and widening access gaps for patients across diverse communities. LACMA’s endorsement reflects the organization’s commitment to advancing policies that support physicians, protect patients and strengthen the healthcare safety net.
“Los Angeles physicians care for one of the most diverse patient populations in the country,” said Gustavo Friederichsen, Chief Executive Officer of LACMA. “They see firsthand how state policy affects access, affordability, workforce stability and the daily realities of delivering care. We believe Xavier Becerra has the experience, values and healthcare knowledge needed to lead California through this next chapter.”
LACMA’s endorsement builds on the shared advocacy priorities of LACMA+CMA, including protecting physician-led care, improving patient access, strengthening the healthcare workforce and ensuring physicians have a meaningful voice in the future of California healthcare.
