Less Paperwork, More Patients: CMA Physician Services Launches MedWay to Strengthen Independent Practices

In April 2025, CMA Physician Services launched MedWay, a first-of-its-kind subscription-based service designed specifically for independent physician practices across California. Created in direct response to member feedback, MedWay delivers comprehensive business operations support—including HR, benefits and retirement management, compliance, and time tracking—to enhance efficiency while preserving the independence that defines private practice.

Early results have been impressive. Physicians in the first MedWay cohort report saving 40–50% on employee benefitsand reclaiming valuable time to plan the future of their practices rather than managing paperwork.

On the October 27 episode of Medical Economics’ Off the Chart podcast, David Ford, CEO of CMA Physician Services, discussed how MedWay was built to solve one of the most pressing problems facing independent physicians: administrative overload.

“A lot more independent physicians are realizing they didn’t go to school—sometimes for 20 years—to run payroll,” Ford explained. “The more of that other stuff we can take off their plates, the better. We’ll restore some of that joy of being a physician.”

Ford also emphasized that supporting independent practices benefits the entire health care system:

“Independent physicians are more likely to work in underserved areas and to build those personal patient relationships that drive better outcomes,” he said.

The interview with Medical Economics editor Richard Payerchin explored several key aspects of MedWay’s model, including:

  • The full range of services MedWay provides to streamline practice operations (4:29)

  • How onboarding and enrollment work for new subscribers (15:14)

  • Pricing and the value proposition compared to competitors (18:44)

  • What makes MedWay’s approach unique in the healthcare landscape (26:01)

For physicians in Los Angeles, MedWay represents a powerful new resource—one that aligns with LACMA+CMA’s shared mission to support, strengthen, and sustain independent practice.
