Special Guest Former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra Shares His Perspective on California’s Healthcare Future
LACMA Opens Dialogue with Gubernatorial Candidates
This past Saturday, LACMA President Dr. Heather Silverman and President-elect Dr. Hector Flores led the annual board of directors retreat. The retreat covered several important topics, including organizational priorities, strategies for leaders to impact growth, membership retention, and enhancing member experience. Additionally, they discussed policy and advocacy challenges that lie ahead.
During lunch, we welcomed former US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. He is currently running for California governor. Becerra shared his vision for improving healthcare in the state. His focus includes supporting physician reimbursement, strengthening the safety net, and expanding access to care. LACMA plans to invite other candidates to share their visions in the coming months as we approach the June primary season. It is essential to share these platforms with our membership. I also encourage feedback from our members regarding candidate preferences.
The Impact of Federal Funding Cuts
Secretary Becerra highlighted a significant concern: the congressionally approved spending plan, which slashed nearly a trillion dollars from the Medicaid program over the next decade. These funding cuts and new regulations, such as work requirements, are expected to push 3.4 million Californians off their Medicaid coverage as changes take effect.
In Washington, a dispute over renewing enhanced premium subsidies has led to the longest government shutdown in history. Without federal action, hundreds of thousands of people could find themselves priced out of Covered California insurance by 2026. This situation poses a serious threat to healthcare access for many residents.
The Future of Healthcare in California
As LACMA enters what could be a historically challenging year, it is crucial to remain steadfast in our mission and values. We must fight against the erosion of physician autonomy. The healthcare landscape is shifting rapidly, and we need to adapt to these changes while advocating for our members and the communities we serve.
Engaging with Candidates
Engagement with gubernatorial candidates is vital. By hearing their perspectives, we can better understand their plans for healthcare in California. This dialogue will help us advocate effectively for our members' needs and priorities. We encourage our members to participate in this process actively.
Physician Leadership Matters
The future of healthcare in California is uncertain, but with strong leadership and advocacy, we can navigate these challenges. We must remain united in our mission to ensure that all Californians have access to quality healthcare. Together, we will make a difference.
