LACMA Partners with CMA to Hold Historic 5 Day PPE Relief Week
The State of California Office of Emergency Services and CMA made available millions of pieces of medical-grade PPE, including N95 masks, surgical masks, shields, gowns and gloves, available FREE to physician practices that have 50 or fewer physicians. From July 27th thru July 31st, LACMA distributed $12M in PPEs for area physicians.
“This week was a true testament to LACMA and CMA working together to help physicians in crisis. The lack of supplies was and remains a paramount issue for physicians as they strive to deliver safe and effective care,” said Dr. Diana Shiba, LACMA President-elect.
LACMA/CMA Distributed 2,325 boxes and shipped an additional 1,039.
In December, LACMA commences COVID 19 Rapid Response 3.0, an initiative to distribute more than 300 boxes of PPE supplies directly to practices from the Los Angeles warehouse. The LACMA Districts provided $10,000 in support of this effort.

Health Equity Council Forges New Path
The LACMA Health Equity Council made tremendous
progress in just a few months thanks to the efforts
of Dr. Diana Shiba, co-chairs Dr. Hector Flores and
Dr. Resa Caivano and members:
Dr. Jerry Abraham, Dr. Troy Elander,
Dr. C. Freeman, Dr. William King,
Dr. Sion Roy, and Dr. Valencia Walker.
The mission of the Health Equity Council is to foster an environment for LACMA which promotes the full health potential and well-being of every member of society and advocates for equity and justice for all.
One of the first initiatives of HEC was the creation of the “Race Against Time” zoom series featuring a wide variety of guests who are experts in structural racism and its impact on health. Dr. Brian Williams, Associate Professor of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, University of Chicago Medical School was the first guest.
In August, Dr. Diana Shiba and CEO Gustavo Friederichsen sent a joint letter to Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas to state, in part: “The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) applauds your recent proposal and the unanimous support of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declaring racism a public health issue facing the region, joining a list of cities, counties, and states across the nation who have taken similar action.”
LACMA Partners with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Bar Association | In 2020, as COVID 19 continued to adversely impact families, LACMA began a dialogue with food insecurity advocates from LA DPH and UCLA to look for ways to amplify existing efforts, mobilize new ones and make a difference in the lives of residents of Los Angeles.
“Our fundamental goal is and remains to leverage the LACMA network, our resource and our partners to add value to not just the conversations around hunger, but help foster solutions,” said Dr. Shiba.
In September, the Executive Committee of the LACMA Board sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom in support of Assembly Bill 826 (Santiago). This bill would have provided desperately needed food assistance to those suffering from hunger, and who worry about where their next meal will come from in the middle of a global pandemic.

MEDIA CAMPAIGNS
#PutItOn | In early Summer, LACMA kicked off an innovative public service campaign in support of mask-wearing and public health officers. The successful “Put It On” PSAs campaign included videos encouraging Los Angelenos to wear masks in accordance with public guidelines. The band Los Lobos recorded a “Put it on” message as well and Rolling Stone Magazine featured them and LACMA.
#MedicineForMasks | The campaign called “#MedicineForMasks” alerted the public about the importance of wearing masks in public to prevent further loss of life, while also stressing the importance of hand-washing and social distancing. Through this unprecedented regional effort, covering 56,000 square miles and nearly 23 million people, the effort deploys social media, earned media and the membership and networks of the eight medical societies to reduce the spread of COVID-19 as it collides with the annual flu season. A media event held in late November featured several local community leaders, including union and physician leaders from UCLA and Charles Drew University, and was led by Dr. Shiba as they addressed the pandemic surge.

LACMA Kicks Off ‘Clear as Mud’ Podcasts | Thanks to the generous support of the Patient Care Foundation, LACMA launched its first podcast series called “Clear as Mud”. The episodes feature guests from physicians to experts in policy and wellness.
CELEBRATIONS & MILESTONES
VIrtual Installation | LACMA Held its first virtual President and Officers Installation and installed its first Asian American female president, Dr. Diana Shiba.
Two Milestone Grants | Thanks to the work of LACMA executive committee member Dr. Hector Flores, LACMA secured a $25,000 grant from the California Endowment to fund health equity initiatives, specifically an environmental scan of Latinx executive leadership in Los Angeles County in partnership with Dr. David Hayes Bautista.
$35,000 from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) to continue LACMA’s MD Wellness Retreats in 2021 in partnership with the Four Seasons Resort, Westlake Village and California Health & Longevity Center

Financials | LACMA is projected to end 2020 with a net operating surplus of over $27,000. Total revenue, total expense, and total net income are listed below with actual income and expense through November 2020 and expected revenue and expenses for December 2020.
LACMA is projected to end 2020 with total revenue down from 2019 by over $100,000. Total
expense is projected to end with an increase of nearly $100,000 from last year. LACMA
membership dues are up from 2019, however, sponsorship and partnership revenue have
decreased significantly from last year. The decrease in sponsorship revenue is offset by the
decrease in meeting expenses, however, expenses are up overall due to the COVID-19
financial assistance and PPE relief efforts that were unique to 2020.
